Titanium is a natural choice for dental and medical implants because it is considered non-toxic, biocompatible, immune to corrosion by body fluids, has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and good fatigue properties. Titanium is also non-ferromagnetic, which means that people with titanium implants can continue to use magnetic medical devices such as MRIs. Titanium is regularly used in cardiology devices for pacemaker housings, lead wires, and vascular stents. Titanium can be anodized to create a non-reflective surface, which is a useful property for use in surgical instruments because it prevents glare under surgical lights. Titanium and titanium alloys can offer substantial weight savings due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. A prime example is the ability to reduce the weight of valve springs and valve disks by up to 70% through the use of a titanium alloy. In addition, titanium is used for highly stressed components such as connecting rods, turbocharger wheels and shafts, pistons, and inlet valves. Due to its good formability titanium can also be easily formed into the complex geometries of exhaust systems.
Owing to its fatigue resistance titanium alloy Ti-6Al4V is well suited for use in engine valves subjected to high cyclic loads.
Nickel alloys stand out due to their oxidation resistance and creep resistance at temperatures of up to 950°C, making them excellent materials for use in exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipes, and even high temperature fasteners. In engine designs, they enable operation at higher temperatures and therefore improve efficiency.
