MedtecLIVE 2019: a 360° view of the entire industry

Logo: MEDTEC Live

From 21st to 23rd May, S+D was represented at the MedtecLIVE in Nuremberg as an exhibitor for the medical technology sector.

Here, we demonstrated our range of products, as well as our standards of quality, and informed visitors about the many possible areas of application for titanium and titanium alloys in the field of medical technology.

The premiere of MedtecLIVE and Medtech Summit

This latest event in the field of medical technology is the result of a joint subsidiary which has been established between the organiser behind the former Medtec Europe in Stuttgart and the NürnbergMesse and the organiser of what used to be MT-CONNECT.

The aim was to map out the entire value chain, from prototypes to production to downstream processes.

Supplemented by the Medtech Summit, which took place at the same time, MedtecLIVE offered visitors the opportunity to learn about new developments within the sector, to come into contact with you, and to make new contacts.

Key topics within the medical industry

Among other things, the topics of the trade fair included: the latest in medical technology, medical devices and medical research.  The trade fair was accompanied by exciting talks on current topics within the field of medical technology, such as issues surrounding regulation.

The trade fair organiser’s closing statement also picked up on these issues: “The almost unanimous opinion within the industry is that the time which has been allocated for implementing the European Medical Device Regulation, i.e. the May 2020 deadline, is not sufficient, especially for medium-sized companies. What’s more, the costs of re-certifying medical devices which are already established on the market are in no way proportionate to the potential return that this may provide.”

Guided visitor tours

One of the unique events on offer at MedtecLIVE were visitor tours led by Peter Reinhardt, editor-in-chief at DeviceMed. These tours broached the subject of regulations, digital processes and electronics within the field of medical technology and also allowed for discussions to take place.

MedtecLIVE summary

Alexander Stein, director of MedtecLIVE, praised the success of the event’s debut, which boasted more than 4,500 visitors and approximately 400 exhibitors from more than 30 countries.

However, our personal impression is that DeviceMed’s statement underlines the fact that those targets which had originally been communicated with regard to exhibitor and visitor numbers were unable to be met.

One reason for the rather mediocre number of visitors was the T4M. This rival event – which S+D attended as a visitor – took place in Stuttgart only 2 weeks previously. However, visitor numbers also declined after the first day here, too.

Interested parties from a total of eight countries visited our stand at the MedtecLIVE.

Areas of application for titanium in the medical industry

We provided information on the numerous areas of application for titanium and titanium alloys in the medical industry, including joint replacements, implants, prostheses, pacemaker casings, surgical instruments, dental wires, walking aids and wheelchairs.

This wide range of possible applications is made possible thanks to the unique qualities presented by titanium and titanium alloys – such as biocompatibility and corrosion resistance.

Stock programme for medical technology

S+D is a company with ISO certification that offers a first-class stock programme for medical technology which consists of round bars, sheets and plates in a wide range of dimensions and sizes.

S+D Spezialstahl does more than just stock. Having our own machine park allows us to create custom blanks and carry out processing in an expert manner.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dirk Verhoeven, our product manager for the medical technology sector.

Conclusion

Despite a low number of visitors and a few minor organisational problems, the high-quality discussions and the fact that we made new, valuable contacts made the MedtecLIVE in Nuremberg a rewarding event.
